Parrot in a Garden Wall Pocket, Mid-century Japan, 1950s
Parrot in a Garden Wall Pocket, Mid-century Japan, 1950s
Vibrant round ceramic wall pocket featuring a parrot in a garden.
Popularized in the early years of the 20th century, between the world wars, figural wall pockets took form in many shapes and sizes. Manufactured in the United States and imported from Europe during these years, wall pockets, or wall vases, held cut flowers or ivy stems for rooting. After the Second World War, imports from Japan became popular and remained popular throughout the 1950s and 1960s. This wall pocket was made in Japan to mimic majolica pottery.
Measuring approximately 7" in diameter, this charming mid-century example has bright finish and evocative bird and floral detailing, perfect for bringing the outdoors inside.
There appears to be a very small split in the ceramic; this does not appear to be a crack, but rather part of the manufacturing as far as we can tell since it is not noticeable from the outside/front of the wall pocket and the glaze covers the location.
