In 1940, the American Institute of Baking published a little propaganda booklet to promote the public's consumption of bread. With a compelling rationale for adding more dough to the family diet -"for vitality, for thrift, for new menu glamour" - this piece provides all one needs to know about the nutritional and economical benefits of bread. Read today, the arguments are good for a bit of a laugh, but the language and styling of New Glamour Recipes absolutely provide transport to America's pre-World War II mindset.
A few examples: "Our old friend toast is making menu-news these days!" "For flavor, for texture, for 'out-of-sight' economy - build up you main dish with BREAD CRUMBS." "The milk and other ingredients used in modern baker's bread make it a good source of calcium, the food-mineral needed for strong, regular teeth and bones, for tranquil nerves, and a good complexion."
Measuring approximately 6" x 5 3/4" with 12 pages of bread facts and bread recipes, this charming reminder of a bygone era is sure amuse.
