Heinz Book of Salads Cookbook, 1925
The Heinz Book of Salads Cookbook.
According to the H. J. Heinz Company in 1925, "every day salads are becoming better appreciated in American homes, though not all of us are yet up to the excellent French habit of a salad with at least one meal out of three." This elegant cookbook, measuring approximately 7 1/4" x 4 3/4" with 90 pages and 100 salad recipes, suggests "to the housewife the large number of appetizing salads that can be prepared on short notice" with the added benefit of "supplying important substances - such as cellulose, vitamines, and mineral salts."
The publication of The Heinz Book of Salads was intended as a gift to the "housewives of the world" at a time when women were primarily responded for meal and party preparation. It's elegant designs echos the company's message that "the salad endows parties with just the correct little touch of formality which marks them off as a special occasion." Added advertising pamphlets and letters from the Home Economics Department of the H. J. Heinz Company and Heinz Talk Radio provide an exceptionally complete taste of Heinz recipes and marketing at the time.
The majority of these recipes are timeless and will work well in today's home, nearly 100 years later. Think of the lovely salads prepared from this cookbook and how they would have enhanced a family's meals with nutritious elegance and grace!
