Oklahoma’s first commercial pottery, founded as Frank Potteries in 1933 and renamed Frankoma Pottery in 1934, was started by John Frank, an art and pottery professor who discovered the rich clays of the region while teaching at the University of Oklahoma.  With the American Southwest and the native peoples of the Americas as inspiration, Frankoma produced dinnerware, art pottery, and commemorative pieces.
