Bird on Branch Mid-century Ceramic Wall Pocket, 1950s
Beautifully detailed ceramic wall pocket featuring a blue-feathered bird on a tree.
Popularized in the early years of the 20th century, between the world wars, figural wall pockets, or wall vases, took form in many shapes and sizes. Manufactured in the United States and imported from Europe during these years, wall pockets, or wall vases, held cut flowers or ivy stems for rooting. After the Second World War, imports from Japan became popular and remained popular throughout the 1950s and 1960s.
Measuring approximately 3 1/2" wide by 6 1/2" tall x 2 1/2" deep, this figural wall pocket is glazed predominantly with vibrant shades of blue, green, and brown and stamp-marked "Made in Japan" on the reverse. This charming mid-century example has a lovely finish and realistic form, perfect for bringing the garden and a bit of birdsong indoors!
